Marguerite Duras’ 1971 story “Ah! Ernesto!” is the basis for Straub-Huillet’s short, which was originally released as a prelude to Eric Rohmer’s Pauline at the BeachEn rachâchant is more directly comic than people might expect of the duo, and as anchored by a thoroughly amusing central figure — a nine-year-old boy determined to quit school because, in his words, “they teach me things I don’t know” — who embodies their decades-long clash with authority and control, this is a charming film from a constantly surprising oeuvre.
